Bergtatt

Here we have a very interesting new Norwegian B.M. band with a very unusual sound. It's a bit slower then the ordinary stuff and has choir like vocals plus ordinary grim ones. It has also got some slower parts with acoustic guitar, flutes and even piano. It all ends up in a very interesting album with an special atmosphere. The oddness of the album can make it a bit hard to listen to at first, but when you get used to it it's great.

Kveldssanger

If you take the debut album above, get rid of the electric guitars, the bass guitar, the drums and the grim vocals and keep only the acoustic guitars, the choir like vocals plus that you make the songs a three times shorter and what do you get? Yes you guessed it Ulver's second. But wait, this is not bad at all, infact the songs are even better then on Bergtatt and there are a lot more of them. This style makes Ulver totally unique in the genre of Viking Metal - come to think of it, I don't think it should be referred to as metal anymore, Epic Viking Music is more like it since there are absolutely no metal elements here what so ever. The songs on the album has only slow harmonical acoustic guitars with additional flutes and cello I believe, accompanied with choir like vocals in a soft and moody way. This album is one of those who are perfect to relax to and I think you know if you like this by now, I know I do.

Nattens Madrigal

I was just thinking about moving this bands reviews to the none metal pages, when I got their 3rd creation. You bet I was surprised to find their most primitive and brutal work to date. It's fast as hell, extremely raw and primitive like a man from the stoneage. Viking metal is perhaps not the right word for this, as it's a praise to the beautiful night. Forest metal or nighrt metal suits better, but who gives a shit. The material is great and the performance good, but the production is quite poor really. I have heard that this was recorded in a forest somewhere and that should explain the quality of the thing. Though it's quite possible that it hadn't been this good with a better production as this gives it more raw energy. I just love this stuff.
