Edge of Sanity

Nothing But Death Remains

Pretty much standard death metal, not as brutal and fast as usual but better performed and more structured songs instead. The vocals are normal deathy with a hoarse style. This album contains only a few good riffs and are mostly boring.

Unorthodox

Now this is more like it! Very good songs and better production. This album can still be boring if you listen to all at once (it's almost 60 min.) Personally I think that this is one of the best death metal albums ever together with Entombed's Clandestine, Carcass's Heartwork and their own newest called Crimson(not counting Death/Doom nor Black/Death like Hypocrisy and Dissection). Several song like Enigma and Nocturnal are just classic tracks but the absolute best one, and one of the best songs ever in any category in my opinion, is the last track "When All is Said". It differs much from the others by it being slower and doomier with piano and double-bass. The worst song here is better then the best on their debut. Overall a killer album and one of my favorites.

The Spectral Sorrows

Here's a twist for you. E. Of S. thought they'd brought death metal to it's limit so they changed their style so they wouldn't get stuck in the same place as many other bands do. It's still got some death metal elements, but much it's much more heavy metal or trash now. It's very intense and enjoyable in the same vain as Carcass Heartwork (the same type of Wow feeling). It's Very well performed and produced and has very good songs. It's difficult to describe the style but it's original and nice. The only thing bad is the drums, just about the same drum beat through all the album. The 6th song is a cover of Manowar's "Blood of my Enemies" with the use of normal vocals and the 10th track is a song called sacrificed which sounds much like Sisters of Mercy's "The Temple of Love" in the same black rockish style. The last real son is the worst with horrible vocals in a demo kind of way. The absolute last track is a great outro with nice keyboards and a trumpet (probably keyboards that too) It's very hard to pick out a favorite son because they sounds so much alike that they easily drown in each other (just like Carcass Heartwork) and that's the biggest problem about his album.

Purgatory Afterglow

Much the same style as the Spectral Sorrows but a bit more in the vain of the new Tiamat sound. More normal vocals and heavier but simpler songs. A very good and original album. This one is however more uneven when it comes to the material which actually makes it easier to listen to. There’s a couple of great songs like Twilight and Blood Colored, and a couple of not as good songs that draws down the overall rating. Last on the album is 11 tracks, each 4 seconds of silence and that sucks when you play a CD shuffle on a multiple CD player.

Crimson

Every year has E. of S. released a new album and this year is no exception. This time they’ve done it deathier then on the last two albums and I believe that it’s their best sound yet. This album is among the best in about all areas, material ,production, performance and so on, is great. The only negative thing I can think of is the playing time... One song only but it’s 40 min long!!! Now I like long songs but this is ridiculous. When Mortiis or Wongraven makes long songs it’s no big deal because their music is smooth and nice to relax to, so long songs only makes it better, but fast and brutal death metal? No, it just gets hard to listen to since you have to be on your alert all through the album to actually notice all cool riffs. when I listened to it to review it I had to pause several times during the song to hear all riffs and parts well so I could give it a fair rating. Since the album has both faster deathier parts and slower more ambient ones and the riffs seldomly is used more then one or two times so could they easily made it into five or six songs that would have been better. This is still one of the best death metal releases ever and deserves this high grade.

Infernal

The annual Edge of Sanity album was a bit of a disappointment I would say. It's a broad album with several styles involved, so it's difficult to categorise it. The first sone is a slower Death metal track in the typical EofS vain. The second track has grim vocals and a much faster riff, all with a black metal touch to it, but I would still like to call it death metal. The songs with this style is the weakest on this album, and I don't like them very much. The third song is slow, almost doomy with normal vocals that we had a taste of on "Purgatory Afterglow". This is one of my favourite tracks I might add, but I don't know what the title 15:36 means. Is it a reference to a chapter in the bible or what? Then the next song is made of faster stuff with grim vocals and then deathier and then doomier. And it goes on and on like this through the whole album. It's like the guy's don't know what to play. I like the slower and doomier stuff with normal vocals best (In the vain of Nightingale, it's said), but much of the "classical" deathy material is great. All in all I rank this as one of their weaker albums, far from the splendidcy of "Unorthodox" and "Crimson"
