Bathory
A grim and evil sounding intro before it explodes in the most brutal album
made at that time. Just think that the most brutal stuff released before
it was with bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Venom, and of course
Metallicas debut Kill'em All. I remembered how parents got all upset
because of Twisted Sister. This on the other hand was so extreme and
brutal that the term trash metal wasn't enough anymore, the most
important black metal band in the Swedish scene was here and here to stay.
The music at this time was very Venom like and it's hard to belive
Quorthorn when he claims to not have heard them before he made this. Still
it was soon proved who were the most brutal of the lot and Bathory quickly
evolved into something really brutal and ugly in the eyes of the normal
man. Anyway, This album has splendid material that you can play on and on
and on. It's so great I can't find words for it. The thing that draws it
down to earth again is the production which is almost zero. The sound is
lousy even with 1984's standard. Still I guess it's the poor production
that gives Bathory the Bathory sound. The fact that it's recorded in
Heavenshore studios (a garage) with equipment from the 60's only makes it
more astonishing, yet all the early Bathory albums are recorded there,
with the same stuff, so I guess it's what it has to be to make Bathory
uniqe. I love this album and think it's one of Bathory's finest and a
album that everyone who ever called themselves a black metal fan should
have. I will warn thee though that this album is hard to listen to at
first, and its not even 27 min. long, but I don't really care.

The Return

Comments aren't really necessary. It pretty much speech for it self,
but I think a few words are in order. When I heard it the first time I though it was terrible. But when I finally got it through tapetrading I realized how good it was. I like it alot. The production is quite good being a Bathory album, and the riffs aren
't as boring as I remembered. It's simple but very brutal songs of high class. It's so extreme that it blew the head of several fans when it arrived. Bathory doesn't suond as much as Venom any longer, OK there are a few elements left, but this is so much
faster and brutal, it's amazing. You can easily hear and understand why this album has ment so much for the modern B.M. scene if you löisten to it. This is also one of those absolute muct albums in a desent B.M. collection. I must point out that it's quit
e monotonous and it may take a while before you'll enjoy this.

Under the Sign of the Black Mark

Personally I think this is one of the better Bathory albums even though the sound is bad, but then again how many Bathory albums have good sound? 3? I think this albums strength is its rawness and great material and the fact that it was one of the first m
odern black metal releases. Who will ever forget the great songs like "Call From the Grave", "Enter the Eternal Fire" or
"Equimanthorn".

Blood Fire Death

This album sure set a new phase in the metal genre when it arrived. Cool
intro with atmospheric sound effects and voices. This must be the first
Viking metal album ever. I think that "Odins Ride
Over Northland/A Fine Day to Die" and the title track are two of the best
in the genre, but the songs between doesn't do very much for me
personally. But it's a good album no question about it.

Hammerheart

This is my absolute favorite among Bathory's albums although it's not
black metal at all. Infact it's one of my all time favorites. The Viking
style music and lyrics gives me a special good feeling since I'm a Swede
to. To bad that the sound yet again sucks like on the previous albums.

Twilight of the Gods

Qourthorn sure goes his own way. This is sort of a continuing on the Epic
metal style with Viking influences. This Album got great sound but the
material isn't as good as on the "Hammerheart" album. This is in total a
good album with a different touch, nice to fall into sleep with.

Jubileum I & II

What is there to say? except that this is two different Bathory "Greatest
Hits" with lots of great songs from all of Bathory's periods plus one song
from their first demo (1983) on both of them and in total tree unreleased
tracks recorded between Blood Fire Death and Hammerheart (Not any of the
songs on the Blood on Ice album). You also get the two
songs from Bathory's first appearance on the "Scandinavian Metal Attack"
album from 1984. These are great albums even if you already got all the
rest of the albums eventhough you would just get 7 new songs.

Requiem

So it's back to the old times again with hammering aggressive drums and
screaming guitars. In fact it's so aggressive that it reminds a bit of
Pantera and Rollins Band. The music is much in the same style as the song
"Crawl to your Cross" on Jubileum I but not with as good material. To
bad that its back to the lousy sound too.
This album is recorded back in 1991/92 between Hammerheart and
Twilight... The material isn't what it used to be but a few good songs are
on it. It's a fairly good album but I don't like it that much although I
play it sometimes.

Octagon

I never thought I would dislike a Bathory album. Even if Requiem isn't
that good so is it far from as bad as this! This must be some oft the
worst shit I've ever heard. The music is something like Pantera or Rollins
Band but much worse. The only thing good is the nicer cover and the last
song which is a very good version of an old Kiss classic.

Blood on Ice

So it came out anyway, the epic Viking saga recorded between Blood Fire
Death and Hammerheart. And just as them is this album recorded in
Heavenshore studios in Stockholm (Read about that in the thick booklet).
The music is like a mix between Blood Fire Death and mostly Hammerheart,
with the epicness of Hammerheart and the better sound of Blood Fire Death.
The
speed is also somewhere in between. The lyrics are about a young boy who
loses his family at young age and then grows up and gets Odins help to
revenge their deaths. The music has all been mixed and fixed up in the
late 95 and beginning of 96 when Qourthorn also added some guitars and
vocals plus cool sound effects. I love this album, sense it has all I like
of Bathory (except the fast parts) with lots of Viking sounds and choirs.
It sounds as from the late eighties but with some newer elements also
which gives the music a special touch.
